fun fact:
STEEL is 3.27 times heavier than concrete
Steel vs. Concrete: Understanding the Weight Difference ⚖️
While both steel and concrete are fundamental materials in construction, steel is significantly heavier than concrete due to its inherent material properties and density.
Key Density and Weight Comparison
The main reason for the difference in weight lies in the density of the materials:
Steel is an iron alloy, which is a metal with a tightly packed atomic structure.
Typical Density: Approximately 490 pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft3) or 7,850 kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3).
Concrete is a composite material made primarily from aggregate (like sand and gravel), cement, and water. It contains small air voids, and its components are less dense than metal.
Typical Density (Normal Weight Concrete): Ranges from about 140 to 150 lb/ft3 or 2,240 to 2,400 kg/m3.
